Jude Law’s Beautiful Disappearing Act

December 07, 2024 at 04:40AM

It’s nearly the season to treat yourself to an annual rewatch of “The Holiday” (if that’s your bag), so splendid timing for Sam Parker’s GQ profile on Jude Law. There is nothing too scurrilous to find here—Parker offers a gentle look into how Law’s career has developed from “charming, handsome man” to darker roles—but it’s a pleasant meander through Law’s filmography.

Later, I ask him if agreeing to interviews like this still feels inherently risky, like exposing too much of who he is could hinder his work somehow. “That’s a really good question,” he replies. “There’s huge amounts of me that no one knows about, that I’ve never given in to reveal, or have any interest in revealing. And it gets frustrating sometimes, because I’ve been in the public eye for nearly 30 years and I feel like there are certain perceptions that I can’t really change [that] people have of me because of narratives that have been written, or rehashed stories from decades ago that are constantly poked at. But I don’t think there’s enough of me out there for people to see me in a part and think: I don’t buy that! I hope not.”
