A Lone Louisiana Lawyer’s Fight against Trump’s Deportations

Jonah Lemm travels to “Detention Alley,” a section of Louisiana dense with immigrant detention centers, to profile Christopher Kinnison, an overworked lawyer whose sense of justice commits him to cases he is almost certain to lose. In the process, Lemm—whose deft, intimate portrait of Kinnison is more than enough to recommend—experiences a harrowing series of encounters with a few suspicious locals who seem determined to run him off.

She shouted: “Delete the pictures!” So I did. I didn’t want any trouble. She looked me in the eyes and said: “We can be the nicest people in the world here, but…” She paused briefly. “If you have bad intentions, we can also be the meanest people in the world.” Shortly afterwards, a massive man sat down behind me and whispered in my ear: “I’ll give you some advice, this is a small town…” He patted me on the shoulder. “Better take off a few minutes before the end of the game.” Then he left. And so did I.
